This competition entry consists of two interlocking courtyard buildings that are offset from one another. Due to the sloping topography of the site, they form a shared forecourt to the north. This arrangement allows for optimal natural lighting, interior and exterior views, as well as visual connections throughout the entire building.
While the single-story volume on the lower level accommodates the kindergarten, the upper level houses the more spatially introverted nursery. The location of the main entrance at the joint between kindergarten, staff areas, and nursery creates a clear and compact arrival situation, with short circulation routes to both parts of the building. The interplay between upper and lower levels, reinforced by the sloping terrain, is reflected carefully in the design. Visual connections between floors, as well as galleries and climbing structures within the group rooms, create a differentiated spatial experience that is further enhanced by the open roof structure.
The children can access the outdoors via loggias adjoining their classrooms. The outdoor areas of the kindergarten and nursery are connected in the southern part of the site by a sledding hill. Spacious yet overseeable outdoor play areas thus complement the inner courtyards, covered terraces, and loggias of the kindergarten, and—alongside the spatially diverse interior—further support the development of the children’s sensory perception.
