The architecture practice Gruber & Schrat was founded in 2025 by Sophie Schrattenecker and Stefan Gruber, after many years of collaboration in the fields of architecture, architectural theory and architectural photography. Alongside unconventional concepts and meticulous planning, the collaborative practice is characterised by a search for fresh perspectives on contemporary architecture within the context of temporal developments.
Stefan and Sophie studied architecture at the University of Arts Linz, as well as architectural history (Stefan) and achitecture and historic urban environments (Sophie) at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London. Their interest in art and cultural history led them to the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg, where they additionally took classes in art history (Stefan) and classical archaeology (Sophie). Both began working in architectural practices while still studying. Sophie also wrote about architecture for daily newspapers (Die Presse, Kurier), while Stefan financed his studies by working as a project assistant and architectural photographer. In 2018 they founded the architecture magazine “Urbanogram, Journal of the Built Environment“ together with colleagues from the Bartlett School of Architecture. After completing their studies, Stefan and Sophie gained experience as construction managers, overseeing projects from planning through to handover. Between 2021 and 2025, they additionally taught Academic Writing as lecturers at the University of Arts Linz. Sophie and Stefan have been state-certified and sworn civil engineers and members of the Austrian Chamber of Architects since 2022.
Stefan Gruber was awarded the third prize in the “The Wall Bologna“ competition organised by con-fine Art (2017). He received the Talent Development Prize in the category “Architecture and Art of Construction“ of the Upper Austrian government (2020) and the Scholarship for Arts of the City of Linz (2021).
Sophie Schrattenecker was awarded the Scholarship for Arts of the City of Linz (2015), the Blue Award for “Ecological Building and Building in Existing Structures“ (2016), and the Talent Development Prize in the category “Architecture and Art of Construction“ of the Upper Austrian government (2022). Her work has been exhibited, amongst other venues, as part of the “Spectres of Time in Space Conference“ at the University of Cambridge.
